"Parents
Taking Action"
("PTA") A Community Service Project
of OHS Health & Safety Services, Inc. Parents Taking Action
(PTA ) is a special OHS random drug testing and substance abuse prevention
program for children who are abusing drugs, and/or who are frequently exposed to drug use,
or who are being pressured to "try" drugs by their peers.
Our program is open to all
families in Costa Mesa and the 60 other communities throughout Orange
County, California. Parents Taking Action is offered exclusively as a
community service of OHS Health & Safety
Services, Incorporated.
Drug
testing is NOT about "catching" people
abusing drugs...
it's
about PREVENTING drug-abuse!
We are willing to help "Parents Taking Action" to help their children...to either avoid beginning or to discontinue substance abuse. At the request
and with the
cooperation of the parent or parents of a child using drugs or exposed to
drug-use, the child can be enrolled - FREE OF CHARGE - into a computerized random-selection
drug testing program confidentially maintained and managed by OHS without cost
to the parents.
There is no age limit
placed on our PTA Program participants, although the majority of those currently participating in our
PTA Program are between the ages of
9 and 18. All meetings with parents and
their child and all testing is conducted at OHS, Inc. offices. (CLICK
HERE for our phone number, address, and a map with driving
directions.) All arrangements for a first meeting and for discussing the
child's enrollment acceptance are made by speaking exclusively with Jean Poole, CEO
of OHS. Jean is the creator and General Administrator of the Parents
Taking Action Program for OHS and can be reached by calling (949) 764-9301
ext 204.
On the first visit to OHS by
one or both or the parent and their child, a short but highly reliable psychological questionnaire is administered
(FREE OF CHARGE) to the child. This test helps determine if the
child has a propensity to "try" or to "use" drugs.
(The test is similar to that given to individuals to help determine if they have
a "impulsive-compulsive" personality.)
The child is then asked to provide a specimen for testing. The specimen is
sent to a certified lab and tested for the presence of substances of abuse,
including "alcohol" and also the so-called "club" or
"rave" party drugs so popular with young adults
today. If the initial lab test (or "screen") indicates a drug or
drugs are present, the lab automatically performs a second, more sophisticated test
on the same
specimen sample to "confirm" whether or not the results of the initial
screen were accurate. (CLICK
HERE to review, "Is drug testing accurate?", and more
details of this two-test process.) A $25 charge to the parent for their
child's drug test is the
only cost associated with our program. All other associated
services are provided free of cost to the parent and child.

page.
Results of the drug test are usually back from the lab within two business days
of the child's visit to OHS. The results (whether positive OR negative)
are reported with strict confidentially, and ONLY to the parent. Free
"Parents Taking Action" information is also offered to parents by OHS
that will help them initiate one or more effective and proven methods to better
"manage" or "control" (essentially, forms of discipline other than corporal
punishment) their child at home if one or more tests come back
"positive" for drugs.
The second and subsequent visits and drug tests of the child at OHS are
automatically scheduled by our computer at randomly-selected future dates. These
dates are established entirely by our computer's random number generator, not
by any OHS staff member. This "random" method of establishing
the dates for subsequent testing accomplishes two important elements of a
successful substance abuse prevention program: (1) it takes the
pressure off of a "personally-involved" person (i.e., Mom or Dad) to
"name the test date", and, (2) it continually keeps the child (and
even the parent) "out of the loop" as to just "when" the
child must provide the next specimen for testing. Since most drugs stay in the
system (are detectable in urine) only 1-3 days, this second
"random-test-dates" element is
especially critical in helping the child to "stay on their toes",
i.e., to STAY CLEAN between testing
dates, and ultimately, stay clean for good!
The cost for each drug test is $25. There are NO OTHER CHARGES associated with participation in
our "Parents Taking Action" Program.
The psychological testing, the informal counseling, and any referrals given are
all provided FREE OF COST to the parent. The random selection of testing
dates by our computer is also provided free of cost. The $25 for the drug test, then, includes
these five processes: (1) a computer-generated date for a random drug test, (2) a collection
of your child's urine sample on that random date at OHS offices, (3) shipment of the specimen to a certified laboratory for testing, plus,
(4) a second "confirmation" test if the initial test is
positive, and (5) a CONFIDENTIAL reporting of the lab result directly to ONLY
YOU, the
parent.
The $25 testing fee can be paid by personal check, cash, or credit card at the time of the
child's visit for testing.IT IS NOT NECESSARY for the parent
to accompany the child to OHS for the follow-up random tests...if the child has alternative transportation.
However, if the child does not show up for testing as
scheduled, the parent is notified of the child's failure to appear.
MOM-DAD...HERE
ARE SOME
OTHER THINGS TO THINK ABOUT IF YOU REALLY FEEL THAT YOU NEED TO "THINK ABOUT IT" SOME
MORE BEFORE YOU FINALLY "TAKE ACTION":
DRUG-ABUSE
DETERRENCE
OCCURS ONLY
THROUGH DISCOVERY AND ACTION!
Do you have reason to suspect (or do you know) that your child has
used illegal drugs OR is misusing legal drugs?
Then, unfortunately,
your suspicions are probably well founded!
Most
often, as parents
we want to believe and trust our children.
Especially, even when we KNOW there is a problem, like most drug-users
themselves we are simply in DENIAL. As a result, we are too slow in
taking the action steps necessary to prevent a substance abuse problem from escalating into a
crisis (and perhaps life-threatening) situation
Our
“Parents Taking action” (PTA) Program offers parents and children
considerable help through
psychological testing and physical testing to identify the existence and degree
of a abuse problem.Once a problem
is identified, follow-up programs exist to help guide both parent and child through
the process of treatment.
Psychological
screening:AT NO
CHARGE TO THE PARENT, we administer a Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory
(SASSI) Test to your child. SASSI helps identify the degree of "probability" of
your child having a substance dependence
disorder.Interpretations of SASSI
profiles also suggest possibilities that will be helpful in planning suitable
treatment if such a disorder is determined to exist.Subtle
questions covered in the SASSI testing enable us
to identify alcohol and other drug problems even when a child does not
"openly" acknowledge drug use.
Physical
testing:Physical sample (urine or hair) testing can identify the
substance or substances being abused. If a
problem is identified, ongoing random testing can be initiated to help the child
to resist abuse and record their progress in doing so.Both the physical
test and the random selection for testing dates
are managed by "us" (i.e., we are a “third party”) and not
by the child's parents.
Therefore, the
parent need not feel "guilty" nor feel a need to apologize or make
excuses to their child for initiating the process of treatment (i.e., testing) or setting the
random dates for testing. Free referral
services:Appropriate referrals - free of charge - can be made to both community
and private programs throughout Orange County for other substance abuse management and parental guidance
services.
