S. Wald, M.D., M.R.O.
Medical Qualifications and Professional Background
Dr.
Michael S. Wald is one of fewer than one-thousand physicians in the world who is
Board-Certified specifically in "Preventive and Occupational
Medicine", and is a Fellow
of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, American
College of Preventive Medicine, American Academy of Disability Evaluating
Physicians, and the Royal Society of Medicine. He is also certified as a Medical
Review Officer, and, is on the Advisory Board of the American Association of Medical Review Officers.
During his 30-years career
in this field, Dr. Wald has served as Medical Director for Chevron USA
and McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Company, and, since 1981, as cochairman of
the department of occupational medicine at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.
Dr. Wald has extensive experience in Workers’ Compensation Managed Care having
served as Medical Director for numerous managed care companies including Cost
Care, Care Systems, Mid-West Comp Review, Blue Shield of
California, and Health Center West. His experience in risk management
and medical guideline development includes service as Medical Advisor for such
national entities as Warren McVeigh & Griffin, Foster &
Higgins, and Milliman & Robertson.
Dr. Wald has authored
a number of textbooks in the field of occupational medicine including
“Corporate Health Metrics” and “Occupational Medicine for Primary Care
Physicians.” He was also a major contributor to the award winning “Medical
Standards Project of San Bernardino County”, a milestone treatise in the
development of pre-placement testing parameters. He has performed extensive
research in the application of functional capacity testing and worker selection,
and in 1984 pioneered the application of the University of Michigan 2-D
strength-testing model to the pre-placement assessment process.
Dr. Wald serves on the
Committee on Ergonomics for the American College of Occupational Medicine, the
Practice Guidelines Committee for the Industrial Medical Council of the State of
California, and is on the attending faculty of the University of California,
Irvine California School of Medicine. He was recently appointed to the advisory board of
the Corporate Health Achievement Award selection committee for the American
College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
